cated on Isla Nublar, an island approximately 120 miles west of Costa Rica, an employee for the genetic engineering company InGen is attacked and killed while placing a Velociraptor into a specially built enclosure, prompting a lawsuit from his family. CEO John Hammond is pressured by his investors to allow a safety inspection by experts before opening the park. He invites paleontologist Alan Grant , paleobotanist Ellie Sattler , chaos theorist Ian Malcolm, and his investors' attorney Donald Gennaro to perform the inspection. The group meets a Brachiosaurus when they set off into the park. At the park, they learn that InGen created the dinosaurs by cloning genetic material found in mosquitoes that fed on dinosaur blood, preserved in Dominican amber. The DNA from these samples was spliced with DNA from frogs to fill in sequence gaps. Only female dinosaurs are created to prevent uncontrolled breeding within the park. The team is also shown the enclosure of the Velociraptor, dubbed "raptors", extremely intelligent, aggressive and ferocious predators.
Having been bribed by InGen's rival Lewis Dodgson , Nedry takes an opportunity to shut down the park's security system so he can steal dinosaur embryos and deliver them to an informant at the auxiliary dock. As a result, the security systems of the whole park are shut down, most notably allowing the Tyrannosaurus to break through the deactivated electric fence surrounding its pen. The cowardly Gennaro flees from the car into a nearby bathroom, while Tim and Lex accidentally attract the T-Rex's attention with a flashlight and are attacked. Grant distracts the T-Rex with a flare, but just as she is about to leave, Malcolm tries the same trick with less success, and in fleeing from the T-Rex attracts her attention and tells Grant to take the kids and run. Gennaro is devoured and Malcolm is severely injured and assumed killed, while the children and Grant only narrowly avoid being killed themselves.

Four years have passed since the disaster at Jurassic Park, and John Hammond has lost control of InGen to his ruthless nephew, Peter Ludlow. Despite having signed a non-disclosure agreement about the prior events, chaos theorist Ian Malcolm has gone public and revealed details of his experiences at Jurassic Park. Unfortunately for him, his stories are not widely believed, threats of legal action prevent him from producing any evidence, and his academic reputation is destroyed.
Hammond summons Malcolm to his home, where he reveals the existence of Site B, Isla Sorna. Sorna was the facility where the dinosaurs were actually engineered, before being sent to Isla Nublar when mature. The island was abandoned after a hurricane wiped out most of the facilities, and the creatures have been living in the wild ever since. Hammond reveals to Malcolm that InGen is bankrupt, and that Ludlow plans to exploit Site B in order to bail InGen out. Hammond requests Malcolm's help in stopping Ludlow and preserving the dinosaurs' natural habitat, by creating a wildlife portfolio that will convince environmentalists to leave the island as a nature reserve. Malcolm initially refuses, but after learning that his girlfriend, paleontologist Sarah Harding , is already on the island, he goes along.

But when the boat's crew are killed, Ben and Eric crash on the island. Scientists Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler have continued their paleontological careers but are working independently. Ellie is married and has two children; and Grant is still digging with his protégé, Billy Brennan . He is approached by Paul and Amanda Kirby , who say they are wealthy thrill-seekers who want Grant to give them a tour of Isla Sorna. Grant is reluctant at first, but he eventually agrees after the Kirbys promise to fund his dig.

Grant suspects that something is not quite right when the plane carrying him, Billy, the Kirbys, and a trio of mercenaries Udesky , Cooper , and Nash , lands. After Amanda uses a megaphone to try to call out to her son in the jungle, they are attacked by a Spinosaurus. They attempt to escape in the plane, leaving Cooper behind. Cooper tries to get them to stop the plane and is killed on the runway by the Spinosaurus. They accidentally fly into the Spinosaurus and go down, fly through the forest and break apart when the Beechcraft Super King Air hits the trees, stranding them on the island. The Spinosaurus attacks them again and tears off the front of the cockpit. Cooper is pulled out of the plane and killed. The plane falls to the ground and the Spinosaurus attempts to crush it, but Grant, Billy, Paul, Amanda, and Udesky escape. They then run into a Tyrannosaurus, which follows them into the forest. They soon run into the Spinosaurus again, and the two theropods engage in battle, with the Spinosaurus emerging victorious, snapping the Tyrannosaur's neck. Grant learns that the Kirbys are actually searching for their son, Eric , who was stranded on the island along with Amanda's fiancé, Ben Hildebrand, in a parasailing accident 8 weeks beforehand. He decides to lead them to the coast, increasing their chances of getting rescued. Along the way, they discover the parasail, as well as Ben's skeletal remains. Billy salvages the parasail, and the Kirbys discover several nearby Velociraptor nests.
