A jet flown by two US navy personnel on a reconnaissance mission over Bosnia, flies off course. Burnett and Stackhouse are played by Gabriel Macht and Owen Wilson. They are in the command of USN Rear Admiral Leslie Reigart played by Gene Hackman. Over a demilitarized zone in territory controlled by Serbian forces, the plane is shot down and Burnett and Stackhouse eject from their plane.
Olek Krupa plays General Miroslav Lokar, who is engaged in a secret genocidal campaign against the Bosniak people. A Serb patrol under Lokar's command finds Stackhouse and executes him.
Burnett sees this and screams in horror alerting the Serbians to pursue him. A rescue attempt is prevented by political concerns that the NATO presence may ruin the peace agreements. So at the rendezvous point, Burnett hears the awful news that he must move to a new location (outside of the no fly zone) in order to be rescued.
As Burnett attempts to reach the new rendezvous point he is stalked by Sasha, a professional assassin, who is sent by Lokar to kill him. While being pursued by Serb soldiers, Burnett falls into the mass graves (that he and Stackhouse had photographed) and hides under a dead body to avoid detection. Reigart sees this on satellite and contacts the media to inform them of Burnett's situation.
While being pursued by Sasha, Burnett stops a pickup truck with Bosniak guerillas heading for the town of Hač which is in the safe zone. As Serbian forces take over the town they believe they have found Burnett's body, but he switched uniforms with a Serb militant and escaped.
The Serbians parade the corpse wearing Burnett's uniform, claiming that Burnett had been shot by rebel forces. Their ruse works and when Burnett and Babic arrive at the next evacuation point, they watch helplessly as the helicopter turns away. He returns to his ejection seat and reactivates the rescue beacon. This also alerts the Serbs to his location.
Reigart leads the rescue mission despite the fact that he is disobeying a direct order. Meanwhile, General Lokar sends both Bazda and Sasha to kill Burnett. Enroute to Burnett's location, Bazda steps on a landmine. Burnett hears the explosion and is alerted.
Sasha sees Burnett hiding behind the ejection seat and hearing approaching American helicopters, he walks toward it. Burnett jumps out of a snowdrift behind Sasha and shoots him several times but fails to kill Sasha. They engage in a hand-to-hand fight until Burnett pulls a flare and stabs Sasha in the chest with it; killing him.
Then T-72 tanks and infantry appear, and begin to fire upon Burnett; who runs to a nearby angel statue. U.S Marines UH-1 Huey helicopters, finally arrive and fire on the Serbians. Just yards away from the rescue helicopter, Burnett turns and runs back to the ejection chair to retrieve the hard drive containing the recon photos of the mass graves.
After the rescue, he gives the photographic evidence to Reigart. The evidence of Lokar's war crimes are presented at the trial. Reigart is transferred to a job in Washington instead of active service, for rescuing Burnett but retires with the respect of his soldiers for the sacrifice he made to recover the downed soldier.
